Masseter Treatment in Rocky River: More Than Facial Slimming
I originally had my masseters treated because I was clenching my teeth and cracking them not because I wanted a slimmer face.
Facial slimming gets a lot of attention, but it’s only one reason people ask about this treatment.
What are the masseters?
Your masseters are strong chewing muscles on either side of your jaw. When these muscles become enlarged, they can contribute to a wider or more square-looking lower face.
Treatment with a neuromodulator such as Dysport temporarily reduces activity in the injected muscles. Depending on your anatomy and symptoms, this may reduce clenching intensity or muscle-related jaw discomfort. Over time, a reduction in muscle bulk may also create a slimmer-looking lower face.
Is this treatment right for you?
A consultation may be helpful if you:
• Frequently clench or grind your teeth
• Experience tightness or soreness in your jaw muscles
• Have enlarged masseters that contribute to lower-face width
Not every wide jaw is caused by large masseter muscles, and not every painful jaw needs injections. Your assessment includes your symptoms, muscle activity, facial anatomy, medical history, and goals.
For clenching and grinding, dental evaluation remains important especially if you have tooth wear or cracked teeth. Injections do not repair damaged teeth or replace a recommended night guard. Evidence for treating temporomandibular disorders with botulinum toxin remains mixed, so conservative options should also be discussed.
What about headaches or migraines?
The patient pictured reported fewer migraines after treatment. Her photos show her before and three months after Dysport to the masseters, forehead, and glabella, before any additional injections at that visit.
That is her individual experience. It does not establish that masseter injections caused the improvement or predict another patient’s response.
Masseter treatment is not the same as the FDA-approved Botox treatment protocol for chronic migraine. Frequent or changing headaches deserve a separate medical assessment.
Why does anatomy matter?
The masseters sit near muscles that help move your smile. Treatment planning requires careful assessment of these structures, your muscle size, and your existing facial proportions.
Possible side effects include bruising, soreness, chewing weakness, smile changes, asymmetry, and unwanted hollowing or skin laxity. Careful planning can reduce risk, but cannot eliminate it.
What results can you expect?
Changes in muscle activity and facial contour develop on different timelines. Facial slimming is gradual, and the degree of change varies.
Follow-up helps assess your response and determine whether—and when—another treatment is appropriate. Treatment is individualized rather than automatically repeated on a fixed schedule.
